Claude Pro vs Max vs API (October 2026): Usage Limits, Tiers and Which to Choose
ClaudeQuick answer: Claude Pro is the entry paid plan for daily individual use, with cheaper annual billing. Claude Max sits above Pro: 5x or 20x Pro usage per session, plus monthly API credits. The API is pay per token with no session limits. Start with Pro, move to Max if you hit Claude Code limits every day, and use the API for apps. Prices are on claude.com/pricing.
Which Claude plan fits you?

|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Trying Claude | Base usage | claude.com/pricing |
| Pro | Writing, research, some coding | At least 5x Free per session; monthly or cheaper annual billing; Claude Code included; Fable needs usage credits | claude.com/pricing |
| Max 5x | Claude Code most of the day | 5x Pro per 5-hour session; monthly API credits; up to 50% of weekly limits usable on Fable | claude.com/pricing |
| Max 20x | Parallel agents, all-day use | 20x Pro per 5-hour session; larger API credit allowance than Max 5x | claude.com/pricing |
| Team | Teams of 2-150 | Separate seats, pooled monthly API credits | claude.com/pricing |
| Enterprise | Large organisations | Per-seat fee plus usage at API rates, annual contract | claude.com/pricing |
| API | Apps and backend jobs | Pay per token, no session limits; scales with usage tiers | API pricing |
How do Claude’s 5-hour and weekly limits work?
Every paid plan has a session limit that resets on a rolling 5-hour window, plus weekly limits. When you hit one, wait for the reset or buy usage credits at API rates. On September 22, with the Opus 5.5 launch, Anthropic said it was “increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans” and giving subscribers a rate limit reset “which you can now save and use whenever you choose” (Anthropic). A saved reset can refill either the 5-hour session limit or the weekly limit (What is the Max plan?).
Does Max 20x mean 20x more per week?
Not officially. Anthropic’s pricing page and its Max plan help article define Max 5x and Max 20x as 5 and 20 times Pro’s per-session usage. Max also has a weekly limit across all models that resets at a fixed time each week, but Anthropic does not publish how the weekly limits compare between Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x, and says it may also apply weekly or monthly caps at its discretion (Claude pricing, What is the Max plan?). Some users argue that the weekly cap grows much less than 20x when moving up from Max 5x (@StatsWire); that is a community estimate, not an Anthropic figure. Check your own limits in Settings > Usage.
What are the Max and Team API credits?
Max and Team plans now include monthly credits for the Claude Platform. Max 20x gets twice as much as Max 5x; on Team, each Standard and Premium seat adds to one pooled monthly balance with a cap; amounts are on Anthropic’s API credits page. The credits work with any available Claude model through the Claude API, Message Batches, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK, but not for interactive Claude Code or extra usage in the Claude apps. They refresh each billing cycle, don’t roll over, and you claim them by linking a Claude Console organization (Claude Help). Pro, Free and Enterprise are not eligible. To see how far the credits go, check per-token rates in Claude API pricing.
Pro vs Max vs API: which should you choose?
| You are… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Writing, researching, some coding | Pro | Entry paid plan with Claude Code and Opus 5.5 |
| Running Claude Code most of the day | Max 5x | 5x session limits plus API credits |
| Running parallel agents or hitting Max 5x weekly limits | Max 20x | Largest allowance |
| Building an app or a backend job | API | Pay per token, no session limits |
| A team of 2+ | Team | Separate seats, pooled API credits |
Opus 5.5 is now the default model for Pro, Max and Team in Claude Code and the Claude app (@_catwu), so even Pro gets the flagship by default.
Can I use my subscription as an API key?
No. A subscription gives you an allowance inside the Claude apps and Claude Code. To call Claude from your own code, you need an API key from the Console; Max and Team API credits are applied to that usage. See how to get a Claude API key, and steer clear of anyone selling “unlimited Claude” access built on shared subscriptions.

FAQ
What is the difference between Claude Pro and Max?
Pro is the entry paid plan with at least 5x Free usage per session. Max sits above Pro with 5x or 20x Pro usage per 5-hour session, more Fable access and monthly API credits. Prices are on claude.com/pricing.
Is Claude Pro cheaper billed annually?
Yes. Anthropic offers Pro with monthly or annual billing, and annual works out cheaper per month. See claude.com/pricing for current prices.
How do Claude usage limits work?
Paid plans have a session limit that resets on a rolling 5-hour window, plus weekly limits. Pro gives at least 5x the Free usage per session, and Max gives 5x or 20x Pro per 5-hour session.
Does a Claude subscription include API access?
Max and Team now include monthly API credits billed at API rates. Max 20x gets more than Max 5x, and Team credits are pooled. Pro does not include API credits.
Is the API cheaper than Claude Max?
For light or bursty coding, often yes. For all-day Claude Code use, Max is usually better value, because the subscription allowance is far larger than the same money buys at API rates.
