Open-Source AI Video Skills for Claude Code and Codex (October 2026 Directory)

Updated · By topai.one editorial team

Quick answer: to make videos with Claude Code or Codex, start with a rendering framework (Remotion for React or HyperFrames for HTML) plus its official agent skills. Then add a task-specific skill: video-shotcraft or ai-promo-video-maker for product promos, anything2explainer for narrated explainers, video-use for editing real footage, or OpenMontage for a full brief-to-video pipeline. Licenses differ, and some are non-commercial or AGPL, so check the License column before using one at work.

All numbers below come from the GitHub API on October 18, 2026, around 15:30 Taipei time. “Last push” is the date of the most recent push to the repository, in Taipei time. We list original repositories only, not forks or mirrors. A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md that teaches the agent a task (Claude Code docs). New to this? Which rendering frameworks do these skills build on?

These aren’t skills themselves; they turn code into video. Most skills below use one of them.

Repository What it does (per README) Stars (Oct 18) Last push License
remotion-dev/remotion Make videos programmatically with React 64,840 2026-10-17 Remotion License: free for individuals, companies with up to 3 employees and non-profits; company license otherwise (terms)
heygen-com/hyperframes “Write HTML. Render video. Built for agents.” Node.js 22+ and FFmpeg 66,158 2026-10-18 Apache-2.0
3b1b/manim Animation engine for explanatory math videos 95,255 2026-09-10 MIT
motion-canvas/motion-canvas Visualize ideas with code (TypeScript animation) 19,377 2026-07-03 MIT

What is the difference between Remotion and HyperFrames?

The HyperFrames README says both “render video with headless Chrome and FFmpeg”. The difference is the authoring model: “Remotion’s bet is React components; HyperFrames’ bet is plain HTML” (HyperFrames). HyperFrames needs no build step, while Remotion uses a bundler. Remotion has a longer track record and a larger ecosystem. The licenses also differ.

Which tools run the whole pipeline?

Repository What it does (per README) Stars (Oct 18) Last push License
calesthio/OpenMontage “Turn your AI coding assistant into a full video production studio”: research, script, assets, edit and composition, and it can start from a reference video 69,277 2026-10-16 AGPL-3.0

OpenMontage has been widely shared on X as a way to turn Claude Code or Codex into a full video production setup (@xuxin_AI). Its pipelines can call paid generation APIs, so read the README before running large jobs. Other users have compiled community roundups of agent editing tools (@Mr_TuanDoan).

How do you choose and install one safely?

  • Read the license first. AGPL-3.0 (OpenMontage, OpenChatCut) has obligations if you modify the code and offer it as a network service. PolyForm Noncommercial (anything2explainer) rules out commercial use without the author’s permission. Remotion needs a company license above its size threshold. None of this is legal advice.
  • Review what a skill can run. Skills can pre-approve tools through allowed-tools, and Claude Code applies that field even for repository skills, so “review the allowed-tools of skills checked into a repository” before running them (Claude Code docs).
  • Watch API keys and usage. Many skills call paid services such as TTS, music or video models, on top of your agent’s own usage. See Claude Pro vs Max vs API for agent limits and how to get a Claude API key if you run on the API.
  • Prefer the original repository. Several popular skills have forks and mirrors. We link only the originals.
  • Check the last push. A skill that hasn’t changed in months may not match the current Remotion or agent versions.

Why aren’t some tools listed?

We list open-source repositories that we could verify on GitHub. We left out closed SaaS products, mirrors and forks, and projects mentioned on X that we couldn’t match to a repository. Missing something? Tell us.

FAQ

What is an AI video skill?

A skill is a folder of instructions (a SKILL.md file plus scripts and templates) that teaches a coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex how to do a task. Video skills teach the agent to plan, write and render videos with frameworks like Remotion or HyperFrames.

Which skill should I start with?

For a general start, Remotion's official remotion-dev/skills or HeyGen's HyperFrames skills. For a product promo, video-shotcraft. For editing real footage, video-use. For a full pipeline from brief to finished video, OpenMontage.

Are these skills free?

The code is open source, but licenses differ. Several are MIT or Apache-2.0. OpenMontage and OpenChatCut are AGPL-3.0, anything2explainer is PolyForm Noncommercial (commercial use needs the author's permission), and Remotion itself needs a company license for larger for-profit companies. Some skills also call paid third-party APIs.

Do these skills work with Codex as well as Claude Code?

Most of them say so in their READMEs. Remotion's skills list Claude Code, Codex, Kimi Code and Cursor; HyperFrames lists Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI. Check each README for the agents it supports.
