Is There an Official Midjourney API? October 2026 Status, Rules and Alternatives
Image & VideoShort answer: no. As of October 18, 2026, Midjourney does not offer a public API, API keys or per-image API pricing. The official word is a July 2025 post saying it is investigating an Enterprise API, plus an October 2026 invite-only MCP test that is explicitly “not for Midjourney in SaaS products”. Services selling a “Midjourney API key” are unofficial and work against Midjourney’s Terms of Service.
What has Midjourney officially said about an API?
On July 16, 2025 Midjourney posted an Enterprise API Survey:
“We’re starting to investigate opening up an Enterprise API for people to start integrating Midjourney into their companies and services.”
The post links to an application form. We found no later announcement of a launch.
What is the new Midjourney MCP test?
On October 10, 2026 Midjourney posted that it wants “to start testing a Midjourney MCP with a limited community” of “creative and technical people” and added: “this is not for Midjourney in SaaS products, it’s for purely artistic and creative endeavors” (@midjourney). An MCP lets AI assistants call a tool. This one is application-only and creative-use-only, so it is not a route to building an app on Midjourney.
What do the Terms of Service say about automation?
Midjourney’s Terms of Service (version effective May 27, 2026), section 1:
“You may not use automated tools to access, interact with, or generate Assets through the Services. You may not resell or redistribute the Services or access to the Service. Only one user may use the Services per registered account.”
The same section says Midjourney “reserves the right to suspend or ban Your access to the Services at any time, and for any reason”, and asks users not to “create any dependencies on any attributes of the Services”.
So what are the “Midjourney API” services you see online?
Third-party “Midjourney APIs” usually automate a normal Midjourney account behind the scenes and resell its output. Based on the terms above, that means:
- They can break without notice. The underlying accounts can be banned.
- There is no official per-image price. Any per-image price is set by the reseller, not Midjourney.
- Your images may not be private. The terms say content is “publicly viewable and remixable” by default unless Stealth Mode is used on a Pro or Mega plan.
Do not build a product that depends on one.
How do Midjourney’s plans differ?
From Comparing Midjourney Plans, checked October 17, 2026:
| Plan | Best for | Key differences | Official pricing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Occasional use | Entry tier; 3.3 hr/month fast GPU time; no Relax mode, no Stealth | Midjourney plans |
| Standard | Regular creators | 15 hr/month fast; unlimited Relax-mode images | Midjourney plans |
| Pro | Professionals, larger companies | 30 hr/month fast; Relax images and SD video; Stealth mode | Midjourney plans |
| Mega | Heavy production | 60 hr/month fast; everything in Pro | Midjourney plans |
Annual billing is 20% cheaper than monthly on every plan. Extra fast GPU time can be bought on every plan. Companies above the yearly revenue threshold in Midjourney’s Terms must be on Pro or Mega.
What should you use instead?
- For your own creative work: subscribe on midjourney.com and use the web app or the official Discord. V8.2 has been the default model since July 24, 2026 (per Midjourney’s version docs, checked October 16, 2026). Its edit model supports “editing with instructions”, up to 4 reference images, inpainting and outpainting (@midjourney), and a “thinking mode” for better prompt accuracy and typography is in testing on the alpha site (@midjourney).
- For a company that needs programmatic access: apply through Midjourney’s Enterprise API form and wait for an official offer.
- For an app that needs image generation now: use an image model with a documented, official API and published pricing.
Which official image APIs can you use today?
| Option | Best for | Key differences | Official pricing |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI gpt-image-2 / gpt-image-2.5 | High-quality generation and editing | Billed per image token; cost depends on size and quality | OpenAI pricing |
| OpenAI gpt-image-1-mini | High volume on a budget | OpenAI’s lower-cost image tier | OpenAI pricing |
| Google Gemini image models | Apps already on Google Cloud or AI Studio | Google’s own tiered image pricing | Gemini API pricing |
Other vendors are competing hard on price. Krea’s own launch chart, for example, claimed its new edit model was faster and cheaper per edit than GPT Image 2 (@TheRundownAI). That is a vendor claim, so compare on the official pages. See OpenAI API pricing for how image tokens work.

FAQ
Does Midjourney have an official API?
No public one. The only official statement we found is a July 16, 2025 post saying Midjourney is 'starting to investigate' an Enterprise API and inviting companies to apply.
What is the Midjourney MCP?
On October 10, 2026 Midjourney said it wants to start testing a Midjourney MCP with a limited community of creative and technical people, and stated it is not for Midjourney in SaaS products. It is an application-only test, not a public API.
Are third-party Midjourney API keys legit?
They are not official. Midjourney's Terms of Service say you may not use automated tools to generate Assets, may not resell access, and only one user may use each account, so these services rely on breaking those rules and can stop working at any time.
What is the difference between Midjourney plans?
Basic is the entry plan. Standard adds unlimited Relax-mode images, Pro adds Stealth mode and more fast GPU time, and Mega has the most fast GPU time. Annual billing is 20% off. Prices are on Midjourney's plan comparison page.
Can a company use Midjourney images commercially?
Yes under the general commercial terms, but Midjourney requires companies above a yearly revenue threshold set in its Terms to subscribe to the Pro or Mega plan.
