Can You Share a ChatGPT Plus Account? Rules, Risks and Legit Alternatives (2026)
ChatGPTShort answer: no. OpenAI’s Terms of Use say a ChatGPT account is for one person, and the official pricing page says the Free, Go and Plus plans are designed for individuals. If more than one person needs ChatGPT, the legit options are separate accounts, a ChatGPT Business workspace (from 2 users), or the pay-as-you-go API.
What do OpenAI’s rules actually say about sharing?
From the Terms of Use (effective January 1, 2026), section “Registration and access”:
“You may not share your account credentials or make your account available to anyone else and are responsible for all activities that occur under your account.”
The same document lists things you cannot do, including:
“Modify, copy, lease, sell or distribute any of our Services.”
And under “Termination and suspension”, OpenAI reserves the right to suspend or terminate access if “You breached these Terms or our Usage Policies.”
The pricing page FAQ is just as direct: “Go, Free, and Plus plans are designed to be used by individuals. Business and Enterprise are for businesses. Business plans are available starting at 2 users.”
What can go wrong with a shared or resold account?
These are the practical risks, based on the terms above:
- You can lose access with no refund. The account belongs to whoever registered it. If OpenAI suspends it for a terms breach, or the owner changes the password, everyone using it loses access. The terms also state that payments are non-refundable except where required by law.
- Your chats are not private. Everyone logged in to the same account works in the same account, so conversation history, memory, uploaded files and custom GPTs are visible to the other users.
- The seller is not OpenAI. When you pay a third party for a “shared Plus seat”, your contract is with that seller, not OpenAI. Any “warranty” is only as good as the seller.
- Usage limits are shared. Plus limits, including the rolling 5-hour limit in Codex and ChatGPT Work, apply per account, so several people on one account hit them sooner.
- Resold access gets flagged. OpenAI’s Pro help page states plainly: “Sharing account credentials, reselling access and automatically extracting data are prohibited.” When users complained about shrinking Codex limits in August, OpenAI’s Codex lead said many affected users “were using sub2api”, tools that turn a subscription into a resold API (@thsottiaux).
What are the legit ways to pay less (or nothing)?
| Option | Who it fits | What OpenAI says (Oct 18, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Light, everyday use | “Unlimited text chats with GPT-6”, limited uploads, images, voice and deep research |
| Go plan | More uploads and images than Free | Low-cost tier below Plus; local pricing in some countries; may include ads |
| Plus plan | One power user | Monthly billing only; advanced reasoning with GPT-6, Codex, deep research |
| Business plan | Teams of 2 or more | “Available starting at 2 users”; per-seat pricing, cheaper billed annually |
| ChatGPT for Teachers | Verified U.S. K–12 educators | Free plan “through June 2027” |
| OpenAI for Nonprofits | Registered nonprofits | “Up to a 75% discount on ChatGPT Business or ChatGPT Enterprise” |
| OpenAI API | Developers, occasional heavy tasks | Pay per token; budget models like gpt-6-luna are cheap for light use (API pricing) |
Plan details come from OpenAI’s Help Center articles for Plus, Go and Business. Current prices are on the official pricing page, and taxes and local pricing can change what you pay. How do you pay for ChatGPT Plus yourself?
- Sign in at chatgpt.com with your own account.
- Open the plan picker (your profile menu, then upgrade) and choose Plus.
- Pay with a card. The pricing page says Go, Plus, Pro and Business can be bought “with any major credit card”.
- To stop paying, cancel any time. The terms say paid subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel, and payments are non-refundable except where required by law.
So should you share a Plus account?
Sharing one Plus login breaks OpenAI’s terms and puts the account, your money and your chat privacy at risk. If cost is the problem, start with the free plan; if a team needs it, use Business seats; if you are a developer, the API’s per-token billing is often cheaper than a subscription for light use.

FAQ
Can two people use one ChatGPT Plus account?
Not under OpenAI's rules. The Terms of Use say you may not share your account credentials or make your account available to anyone else, and the pricing page says Plus is designed for individuals.
Is buying a shared ChatGPT Plus account allowed?
No. The Terms of Use also forbid selling or leasing the Services, and OpenAI may suspend or terminate accounts that breach the terms. A buyer has no relationship with OpenAI and no protection if access stops.
What is the legit way for a small team to share ChatGPT?
ChatGPT Business. It starts at 2 users and gives each person their own seat, priced per user with cheaper annual billing.
Is there a cheaper plan than ChatGPT Plus?
Yes. ChatGPT Go is a lower-cost personal plan between Free and Plus. Plus is billed monthly only. Current prices are on chatgpt.com/pricing.
Is there a free way to use ChatGPT?
Yes. The free plan is available to everyone; on October 17, 2026 the pricing page listed unlimited text chats with GPT-6 on the free plan, with limits on uploads, images and other tools.
